A little more than a year ago, I listened to Andy Stanley teach the youth of his church. His message was concise and clear: no one has the right to label you. It was a spectacular lesson that I think everyone needs to receive, so I want to share it with you on our blog.
What if I walked into your home with one of those digital label makers and began labeling things around your home? I’ll place a label on things in your living room, go through the kitchen to label all the cabinets, and then begin labeling the clothes in your closet.
You would probably look at me like I was insane, mutter a few things under your breath, and promptly escort me out the door.
WHO CAN LABEL?
I have no right to label those things in your house. But if I have no right to label your things, who does? Only three entities have the right to label things.
1. The Manufacturer
Manufacturers label their own products all the time. In fact, they are required to label them. When they make and produce something of their own design, they have every right to label what it is, what it does, and how it works.
No one walks into a factory and says, “Hey, you have no right to label that!” Why? Because they made it. They can label it.
2. The Buyer
When you buy something, you now have the right to label it. You paid a price to own it, and you can label it how you see fit. When a mother buys a backpack for her child, what is the first things she does to that bag? She takes out a marker and labels that bag with her child’s name on it. While in the store, she could not label it, but once she paid the price to own it, she earned the right to label her purchase.
3. The Owner
I may not buy an item, but once it is given to me, I own it. I have the right to label what I own. Every time a book is gifted to me, I label the inside cover with my name and add it to my collection. I didn’t write the book, I didn’t buy the book, but I own it. That gives me the right to label it as mine.
ONLY ONE CAN LABEL YOU
If only the maker, buyer, or owner has the right to label something, who has the right to label you? Jesus created you (Colossians 1:16), Jesus bought you with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), and He owns you (1 Corinthians 6:19).
No one on this planet has the right or authority to label you. Fat, ugly, gay, or stupid, no label is theirs to hand out. Only One has the right to label you, and that is Jesus Christ.
Anyone else who tries to label you has chosen to ignore God and defame you with ungodly labels. Their labels for you are libel.
THE GOOD NEWS
The good news? If you are a child of God, He has already labeled you:
- Beloved of God (Romans 1:7)
- Blessed of the Father (Matthew 25:34)
- Chosen vessels (Acts 9:15)
- Dear children (Ephesians 5:1)
- Holy brothers and sisters (1 Thessalonians 5:27; Hebrews 3:1)
- Kings and priests to God (Revelations 1:6)
- Vessels for honour (2 Timothy 2:21)
- and much more.
You are loved and you are valued, and God made sure you could know that by the labels He chose to give you.
